At a shopping centre like Bluewater, getting noticed is not hard- staying memorable is. The challenge is choosing formats that command genuine attention, not ones that fade into the background as just another banner.
That was the thinking behind ARC UK’s work with Landsec at Bluewater Shopping Centre in Kent. Rather than relying on the traditional PVC banner format that had been used for years, the project explored a more impactful and sustainable way to commercialise advertising space.
ARC UK delivered six custom-built 5m x 3m backlit lightboxes, designed, produced and installed across Bluewater in September 2024. The result was a premium advertising opportunity for brands, aligned with Landsec’s wider ESG objectives.

Landsec is one of the UK’s leading property companies, with a portfolio spanning retail, workspace and mixed-use destinations. At Bluewater, the opportunity was to rethink how advertising space could work harder- for both brands and the shopping centre itself. Traditional PVC banners had been the go-to for years, but Landsec was looking for an alternative that could deliver greater visual impact while also supporting its environmental goals.
That created an opportunity to move beyond a conventional banner and introduce an advertising format with a more premium presence- one that could work across different campaigns and sectors while remaining practical for future use.
Traditional advertising formats can do the task, but they do not always create the level of buzz that major retail environments demand.
Traditional advertising formats can do the job, but they don’t always deliver the level of presence that major retail environments call for. For Landsec, the challenge was to create an advertising solution that could make better use of available space while answering several requirements at once.
The format needed to:
This was not simply about replacing one printed format with another. It was about creating an advertising asset that could continue delivering value for both the brands using the space and the landlord managing it.
ARC UK developed, produced and installed custom 5m × 3m backlit lightboxes to replace the traditional PVC banner approach. The six units installed at Bluewater provide a much stronger visual presence, using illumination to give campaigns greater prominence within the shopping centre environment.
But the solution was designed with more than visibility in mind.
The lightbox graphics use PVC-free printed blockout fabric, finished with a stitched PVC-free silicone Keder system. This construction supports Landsec’s environmental objectives while providing a practical format for changing campaigns.
The graphics can also be removed, stored and reused for future campaigns. That means the advertising solution is not limited to a single activation; the same infrastructure and graphics approach can support ongoing commercial opportunities.
The project began with a simple but important question: how could the available advertising space work harder for Landsec and its brand partners?
ARC UK looked beyond the traditional banner format to develop a solution capable of delivering greater visual impact while aligning with the centre’s sustainability objectives.
ARC UK designed the custom lightboxes at 5m × 3m, creating a substantial illuminated advertising surface capable of giving campaigns a strong presence within Bluewater.
The graphics were produced using PVC-free printed blockout fabric, with a PVC-free silicone Keder system. This allowed the advertising format to move away from conventional PVC banner materials while maintaining the quality required for a premium retail environment.
ARC UK managed the production and installation of six lightboxes at Bluewater in September 2024, turning the concept into a functioning advertising platform for the centre.
A key part of the approach was making the graphics suitable for future use. Rather than treating each campaign as a one-off installation, the graphics can be removed, stored and reused, helping extend their value and support Landsec’s environmental goals.
The finished installation gave Bluewater a new advertising format designed to work harder than a conventional banner.
Six large-format lightboxes now provide brands with a highly visible platform across the shopping centre, combining scale, illumination and premium presentation.
The solution also created a more flexible commercial opportunity. Brands from different sectors can use the lightboxes, demonstrating that the format is not tied to one particular type of campaign. The source material highlights SMEG, Sephora, Dior, Lindex and Sonic 3 the Movie among the brands using the marketing opportunity.
Significantly, the lightboxes were designed to deliver both commercial impact and environmental value. Their reusable graphics reduce the need for single-use campaign materials, while the PVC-free fabric construction helps support Landsec’s sustainability objectives.
Retail environments move quickly, and the best visual communication solutions need to work commercially as well as creatively.
ARC UK brings together the strategic thinking, production capability and installation expertise needed to turn an advertising concept into a practical solution for busy retail environments.
